Beginner Box cancelled: what to learn with instead
Wizards of the Coast cancelled the Star Trek Beginner Box in all regions because of delays in production, logistics and shipping. It held ten Jumpstart-style 20-card half-decks, two playmats and learning guides. It does not affect any other product in the set.
For Magic Academy sessions and demos, the official recommendation is to use Welcome Decks, Jumpstart or Play Boosters. If you are just starting out, our beginner’s guide to Magic explains everything from scratch.
New Star Trek mechanics
Besides the Officer creature type, which debuts in this set, several species have their own type: Klingon, Vulcan, Borg, Lanthanite or Q. These are the main mechanics:
- Federation: an ability word that scales with the number of different creature types among your non-Borg creatures. It rewards decks with many species.
- Assimilate: a Borg-only action. It puts the creature under your control with a +1/+1 counter, makes it a Borg artifact creature and removes all its other creature types, which dismantles its owner’s tribal synergies.
- Face a Dilemma: it triggers whenever you choose one or more modes for a spell or ability, so modal cards gain value.
- Beam me up: like Flashback, but you also pay the cost of returning a creature you control to your hand. For example, Open Communications is cast from the graveyard for {2}{U}.
- Strange new worlds: it counts the differently named lands you control, designed for mana bases with dual lands and fetch lands.
- Spacecraft and Station: they return from Edge of Eternities. The ship enters as an artifact, you tap another creature to put charge counters on it equal to its power and, at the threshold, it becomes an artifact creature.
Key cards in the set
These are the most talked-about cards so far, with their text checked on Scryfall:
- The City on the Edge of Forever ({3}{W}{B}, rare Saga): chapter I phases out all artifacts and creatures and creates a 0/1 Human token with “Permanents can’t phase in.” II draws two cards and each player loses 2 life, and III sacrifices a creature token to gain 5 life. Phasing out ignores Indestructible and Hexproof, and everything depends on the token staying alive.
- Salt Vampire ({1}{B}, rare): it has lifelink and, when it enters, you look at an opponent’s hand, choose a nonland card and exile it; its owner draws a card.
- U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class ({3}, legendary spacecraft): the first time each turn it gets charge counters, you exile the top card of your library and may play it that turn. With 7 or more counters it is a 4/5 artifact creature with flying and vigilance. It needs no colour at all.
- Captain James T. Kirk ({2}{R}, mythic): when it enters or attacks you choose between discarding and drawing, creating a 1/1 red Officer token or giving your creatures +1/+0. If you have no cards in hand, you choose one or more modes.
- Captain Kathryn Janeway ({3}{G}, mythic): it lets you play an additional land each turn, and she and each creature you control that enters the battlefield explore.
- Highly Illogical ({1}{U}, uncommon): it counters a spell with mana value 2 or less and, if you pay the additional kicker cost of {1}{U}, it counters any spell.
The four Star Trek Commander decks
Each deck brings 100 cards with more than 30 new cards, tokens, a deck box and a strategy guide. These are the commanders and the plan of each deck according to Wizards:
| Deck | Commander | Game plan |
|---|---|---|
| Federation Fleet | Jean-Luc Picard | Strengthen your crew and charge your ships until they become creatures |
| Landing Party | Spock | Differently named lands and landfall effects to speed up your mana |
| Klingon Fury | Worf | Attack the whole table at once: the more opponents, the stronger the warriors |
| We Are the Borg | Borg Queen | Waves of Borg tokens and assimilating enemy creatures |
Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest ({4}{B}{B}) gives your artifact creatures +2/+0 and, when it enters, assimilates a creature from an opponent’s graveyard. If you are not sure which deck style suits you, review the types of Magic decks.
Shock lands return to Standard
The main set includes the complete cycle of ten shock lands, with the LCARS frame of the Starfleet interface and planetary landscapes, such as Watery Grave or Sacred Foundry. They enter tapped unless you pay 2 life, and they exist in regular, foil and surge foil versions.
For Standard this is great news: two-colour, three-colour and larger mana bases will be faster and more consistent. And since every shock land costs life, it also favours aggressive decks. The exact legality depends on Wizards’ rotation, so check it before buying to play.
Signed cards, Stardates and collecting
There are seven Headliner cards hand-signed by Star Trek actors, with about 250 copies of each, and they only come in Collector Boosters in any language, always with English text. Then there is the Stardates subset (code SDS), with 30 reprints featuring Star Trek art, such as Khan, Engineered Evil, which is a version of Sheoldred, the Apocalypse. Finally, the LCARS shock lands and the other special treatments offer more affordable alternatives to the signatures.
The prices of cards and sealed boosters depend on demand and change over time; do not take this as investment advice.
How to get ready for the launch
- Decide your format: Commander with one of the four decks, Standard with the main set or Draft with Play Boosters.
- Note the prerelease date at your store and reserve a seat, because prerelease spots tend to sell out.
- Choose a commander: the four commanders have very different plans, so pick the one that best fits your group.
- Talk about power level with your table before playing, the so-called rule 0, especially if you are going to upgrade the deck.
What we do at Deck Lab
The preconstructed lists we reserve at Deck Lab are Bracket 2 — Core, designed for playing with friends. If you fall in love with one of the Star Trek commanders or want a more powerful deck, tell us in the custom Commander deck form: you choose the bracket, commander and budget, and you receive the list before we build anything. If you already have a deck and want to fine-tune it, you can also upgrade your Commander deck. And if you are interested in the competitive level, read our guide to competitive Commander decks (cEDH).
Content reviewed: 7 October 2026. The final lists may change until launch. References: Star Trek products and collecting (Wizards of the Coast), Beginner Box cancellation and the set’s cards on Scryfall.
